There is a major shortfall in faculty in the leading Indian Universities and Institutes. Situation is so grim that Government has to increase the retirement age to 65 years for central universities. Faculty posts are lying vacant in all universities / institutes. This is majorly because of student not taking admissions in Research (Ph.D.) programme and not interested in  teaching jobs.  Candidates prefers going in for industry jobs.

Therefore, those who are interested in teaching faculty jobs, there are a lot of vacancies exist and being advertised by the Universities and Institutes in Government sector. Because of shortage of the faculty, sometimes universities/institutes relax some qualification criteria and  hire candidates on contract basis also. Normally candidates need to clear the National Eligibility Examination (NET) and should have Ph.D. qualification for any government University and Institutes.

Posts and Pay Scales
There are only three designations in respect of faculty teachers in universities, colleges and institutes namely Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors only. The pay scale for these faculty posts is as follows after implementation of 7th CPC pay matrix.
