Guidelines for University Teaching Assistantship Scheme – 2006
Applications are invited from eligible Indian citizens for the University Teaching Assistantship (UTA), for the year 2011 to assist the Faculty, who are engaged in the teaching of M.A./M.Sc./M.Com./M.Ed./LL.M. programmes in the Departments and to pursue Ph.D programme in the concerned department.
The last date for submission of the applications to the concerned Heads of the Departments is September 30, 2011. The Head of Departments are requested to send duly processed applications at most by December 15, 2011.
1. Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates (general and reserved categories) who have passed their Master’s Degree courses in the current year (2011) or in the previous year (2010) and have scored more than 55% marks at the Post-Graduate as well as Under-Graduate levels and are among the top 30% of the successful candidates in their University will be eligible to be considered for appointment as University Teaching Assistants (In Departments where the total no. of students is 10 to 12 only, all candidates having secured 60% marks both in graduation and postgraduation will be eligible to be considered).
2. Period of Teaching Assistantship:
The University Teaching Assistantship will be awarded initially for one year and may be renewed annually on the recommendations of the Departmental Research Committee after a performance review for a maximum period of three more years. The total tenure as UTA will not exceed four years. The UTA shall stand terminated from the date of Ph.D. viva-voce or from the date UTA resigns. At the time of joining, UTA are required to give undertaking that they have applied for admission to Ph.D in the University of Delhi.
UTA’s should apply for extension on the prescribed proforma within two months of expiry of tenure.
3. Stipend:
University Teaching Assistants would be paid a stipend of Rs.30,000/- per month (this includes HRA of Rs. 6900/-) and an annual contingency of Rs.10,000/- (for Arts, Commerce & Business, Mathematical Sciences and Social Sciences Subjects) and Rs. 25,000/- (for Science Subjects). Those candidates already availing UGC/CSIR/DST/DBT/ ICMR/ICAR or other fellowship or any other financial assistance allowed to draw the difference of the amounts in such a way that the total value of the stipend does not exceed Rs.30,000/- p.m.
4. Responsibilities:
(i) Incumbents selected under this Scheme be involved in Practical, Internship, Seminar, Symposia tutorial teaching only, for a maximum period of six hours per week, in addition to their research work.
(ii) The selected candidates will be allowed to join as UTA subject to the conditions that they will register themselves for the Ph.D. at the ensuing session positively, if not already registered and will have to qualify UGC/CSIR NET examination within 2 years from the date of their joining as UTA, failing which the University Teaching Assistantship will be stopped.
5. Termination:
The University reserves the right to terminate the Teaching Assistantship on the ground of unsatisfactory report of the research work and other duties to be carried out by the candidates without any notice.
6. Leave:
The UTA shall be entitled for leave with salary for a maximum period of 30 days per year in addition to public holidays, but will not be entitled to vacations e.g. summer, autumn, winter etc. The leave due can be carried over to the next year, however not more than 30 days can be carried over. The female awardee would be eligible for maternity leave at full rates for a period not exceeding 135 days, once during the tenure of their UTA. The stipend amount for leave period will be paid after the UTA resumes duty and submits a medical certificate in support of actual confinement. It is expected that the UTA will make up for research work during the remaining tenure. An UTA will be allowed at most one year leave without stipend in whole tenure to pursue research in any other University/Institute in India or abroad. UTA will be not entitled to any extension for such period.
Applications of the incumbents for grant of leave, duly recommended by the Heads of their respective Departments, will have to be forwarded to the Dean (Research) for according necessary sanction. The Head of the Departments concerned and the Scholarship Section shall maintain leave records of the University Teaching Assistants.
7. Medical Facilities:
The University will not provide any financial assistance to the University Teaching Assistants towards the medical facilities. However, they may avail of the medical facilities available in the W.U.S. Health Centre during the tenure of the University Teaching Assistantship in accordance with the University rules.
8. No. of Assistantships:
There will be a maximum of five Assistantships for small Departments and Ten Assistantships for those Departments where more than 200 students are admitted per year in M.A./M.Sc. Part I.
Note:
(i) Applications of the candidates who have appeared/appearing in the fourth semester examination of 2012 may also be considered, if necessary. In such cases, the top 30% will be determined on the basis of the performance in three semesters taken together.
(ii) Since UTA Scheme has been introduced for encouraging Doctoral (Ph.D) research, it will be available only for candidates pursuing their Ph.D programme. The Departments where M.Phil. is a pre-requisite qualification for Ph.D. admission, will not be able to avail the facilities provided under the scheme.
(iii) The candidate rejected once will become ineligible to be considered again in the following year under the Scheme.
(iv) Candidates belonging to the reserved categories, irrespective of the condition of their being among top 30% of the successful candidates of each academic session, will be eligible to be considered provided they have secured at least 55% marks in the Post- Graduate and Under-Graduate examinations.
(v) Preference will be given to the candidates who are UGC/CSIR, JRF qualified.
