There’s more to celebrate than UPSC

With the declaration of the UPSC 2019 result, there has been an interesting development of conversation online, mainly on WhatsApp groups. The sentiment in most of the conversation has been that of disappointment. This is because, of the 829 selected candidates, none has been from our community. Now knowing the competitive nature of the said exam and expecting someone from our community to be on the list every year, I think the confidence we have on our youth is commendable. At the same time, it is frightening for our youth the amount of expectation and high standard of success set by our society. I’m no expert on “how to crack the Civil Service exam” and I do not have a YouTube Channel with videos about the tricks for such an exam. As such the objective here is not to analyse why our youth could not clear the exam this year or to give any advice on what to next and how to prepare for it. The objective here is rather of a larger issue, and it’s also a continuation of the personal discussion with friends or classroom discussions with professors over the years. 

Being a young university student and soon to be job hunting from place to place myself, I had some problems with the kind of conversion happening around the idea of “success” that

The declaration of UPSC-CSE 2016-17 results gives me a certain nostalgia as I relooked my own journey; of how marvellous and yet how challenging the ride was. Inevitably therefore, I reflected on its trail.

For many, the CSE journey began in college; some even in school. For me, it was my dad's constant prodding that made me take up the UPSC gauntlet, right after college, in 2009. Though it had been my dream to be a philosophy professor in Oxbridge or some Ivy League university instead, given my penchant and inborn ability for the same. Of course I did not succeed that first time I gave the exams. Could not even pass the preliminary screening test, thanks partly to my inadequate preparation, and partly to the fact I suffered from dysentry while giving my afternoon paper that day, so that the call of nature had to be answered and I had to leave my answers unfinished!

But that failure proved to be a damning indictment of my overconfidence, and a clarion call. I decided to focus my studies from that point forth, putting in the necessary labour and the hours required for the same; even renting a room in Ravindra Nagar, to "crack" this mother of exams. And then something struck again. Before I gave the 2010 prelims, my father almost died from acute kidney failure, with the recovery process itself a miracle; and not long after, I suffered from - of all possible diseases - swine flu.

And yet God remained provident, and I could give my prelims exam without any dysentry or related hassle. Then, several months later, the result was declared - on an afternoon when I was fast asleep.

MY DELHI EXPERIENCE - By MANTHIANCHING GUITE

It’s been almost 6 years (approx.) of Delhi life that I have tasted so far and I won’t say that I am not enjoying if fully. Yes, there are occasions when I feel I have landed in a city that appears vague and weird to me but then there are certain opportunities and freedoms that I would not have got in any other place, especially considering my College and University.

The decision to leave my family and the cocooned existence in my hometown was of course a challenge for me. I wondered again and again if I would be able to stand up to the rigours that my decision implied. It was not easy for me, not at all- to adjust in metropolitan Delhi and to carve my way amongst lakhs of people. Initially things didn’t go well for me and my preconceived notions about Delhi were strengthened. My preconceived notion said that Delhi was one place which kicked newcomers, trying to throw them out and only if you could “take” these kicks without getting frustrated, would you be accepted here.
